Follow the Money....

Follow the Money....

Not everyone will agree with this but I'm going to say it anyway...

If you want your farm business to survive and thrive, just follow the money.

If we, as a country or industry have a chance at delivering on a food security strategy or wish to continue feeding the nation then we need people and businesses that are fit, healthy and thriving.

The current 'food production' system that we have has driven us to  a place where it is no longer economically viable for most farming businesses to survive on food production alone.

We have an industry where farmers are working increasingly more hours for less reward. Farm businesses are drowning in debt and the mental health of farmers is shocking. Much of that related to financial worries and stress.

So, what to do about it? Well, start by following the money.

We are fortunate enough in the UK to have a democratically elected government - whatever your views may be on them. But beyond casting your vote, there is little you can do as an individual to alter or change government policy and strategy.

Work with the system rather than against it.

If the government want you to produce milk, and the numbers stack up, then do that. If they want you to plant hedgerows, then do that. Just follow the money.

Don't get caught up in the politics of it all. Don't try and work against the system. And don't be so reluctant to change that it comes at the detriment of your health or business.

If you can follow the money and put your business on a better financial footing then you will be in a much stronger position to deliver on the food security strategy for this country - in whatever shape or form that takes.

Focus on what you can control, not what you can't.

As Darwin once said;

It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.

We are in a changing environment and a changing world. If we are to have any a chance of survival then we need to adapt and adjust.

A good place to start is by following the money.
